Ronaldo breaks knockout duck as Portugal setup Spain clash
Substitute Gonçalo Ramos heads a 94th-minute winner to send Portugal past Croatia 2-1.
Portugal secured a dramatic place in the World Cup Round of 16 after a grueling, heat-sapped battle in Toronto ended in a 2-1 victory over Croatia.
The match burst into life during the second half when Ivan Perišić broke the deadlock, slipping a neat finish beneath the advancing Diogo Costa to give Croatia a deserved lead. Portugal’s initial response via Cristiano Ronaldo was swiftly chalked off for offside, but Roberto Martínez’s men found their lifeline shortly after. When Nikola Vlašić dragged down Renato Veiga inside the area, the referee pointed to the spot after a brief VAR review. Ronaldo stepped up, striking the penalty firmly down the center to register his first-ever career goal in a World Cup knockout stage.
Despite conceding, Croatia dictated much of the tempo and created the higher volume of clear-cut opportunities. Mateo Kovačić saw a low drive brilliantly tipped onto the woodwork by Costa, while Mario Pašalić narrowly missed finding the target with a late header.
With extra time looming, Portugal found their moment of lethal efficiency four minutes into stoppage time. Rafael Leão delivered a pinpoint cross to the back post, where substitute Gonçalo Ramos rose highest to power home a header. There was still time for final-seconds heartbreak for Croatia, as Joško Gvardiol’s apparent equalizer was ruled out by the assistant referee's flag.
While Croatia were left visibly stunned by the offside decision, Portugal celebrated a hard-fought passage. They now march toward a heavyweight round-of-16 blockbuster against neighbors Spain in Dallas this coming Monday.
